Whois Experian? Spammers.

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

The credit company Experian has been spamming me for information about my “businesses”. Last year they called me from 866-660-6940. Today I received another call from Experian, from phone number 888-929-3282. They ask me if this is my business and if their contact information is correct. My phone number and contact information were pulled from the Whois database (the only place I ever entered it) which I changed after their first calls. Apparently didn’t recheck Whois and are calling again.

Whois is basically a directory of contact information of website domain owners. Technically a domain registrar can remove my domain name if the contact information is invalid, and the government is getting involved to mandate accurate information.

So here are my options:

  1. Post fake info and potentially lose my domains
  2. Pay money to GoDaddy (my current registrar) to hide my contact info
  3. Post real info and get unsolicited mail, email, and phone calls.

I suggest that you do not post personal contact information, except maybe an email address to catch legit enquiries. I don’t forsee registrars cracking down on me unless there is a legal issue with my website. If you know of a good registrar that offers free whois protection, let me know.

Perspective Art

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

I love this stuff. Painting onto an existing 3D space so that it looks real from a particular vantage point. Outside of this vantage point it is hardly recognizable, but thats all part of the art too. Maybe I’ll paint something like this for my place? A good conversation piece for sure. Here are some great examples:

Felice Varini is a French artist who creates geometric paintings spanning multiple rooms and even multiple buildings.

Another is Julian Beever, an English chalk artist who creates drawings that looks like they are coming out of the sidewalk:
